Movie Review: Who the *&%$ is Jackson Pollock?

On DVD now.

Sometimes the greatest battles in the art world are with people who know nothing about it. Occasionally they can be noble, occasionally not, but in the case of Teri Horton, you find yourself pulling for her to put her finger in the seething hole that is the art critics of the elitist crew. Can she plug the dike?

Who the *&%$ is Jackson Pollock? Is 74 minutes of fringy documentary style, that at some points seem almost staged. The great thing is though, it is completely real. That is the appeal of it. You find yourself rooting for the "underdog" once again, not to mention the hopes of another person finding a prize for $5 at a thrift store.

Seventy-three year old Teri Hatcher comes across a painting that she is giving as a gift to a friend. Knowing nothing about art, Teri and her friend joke about the lousy style and even think about using a possible Jackson Pollock original as a dart board.

After years of unsuccessful attempts at getting the art world to verify that it is an original, the help of a forensic scientist is enlisted. New York art critic Tomas Hoving is not impressed in the scientific evidence found, that links Teri's painting to Jackson Pollock directly. Hoving comes across as almost a cartoon character of a chap who seems as though he never realized that he was being filmed. The pompous attitude only accentuates the fact that this film is more about struggle, and acceptance of others outside your circle.

For anyone that has seen Pollock's work, it is beyond me how anyone can tell the difference between a fake or not, but then again, I don't devote my life to eye-balling his paintings as some of the experts do.

So the question remains. After all the evidence presented, linking this painting to Pollock, and the art world refusing to accept it, is it more of an elitist snub, jealousy that they didn't find it themselves, or is it really not a Pollack original?

I will let you decide on the "experts" presented in the film and how you value their opinion. But if you ask me, I say it is for real.

I recommend if you enjoy the underdog theme, like fun documentaries, and are someone who always hopes they come across a treasure in an unlikely place, then this movie is for you. I give it 4 out of 5 paint cans.

Here are the two paintings in question. Which is Teri's painting and which sold for $140 million recently?
