Define Art Terms of the Week - Gothic Art and The Group of Seven

Welcome back! Here are a couple of styles of art that really inspire my work.

Gothic Art

Gothic Art began in Northern Europe. The time frame was from the middle ages up until the beginning of the Renaissance. It contains religious devotion, it is known for the distinctive arched design of its churches and stained glass. Most of the art was produced in the 5th Century to 16th Century A.D.

Although superseded by Renaissance art, there was a Gothic Revival in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Group of Seven

The group was formed by landscape artists inspired by the wilderness paintings of Tom Thomson, who died under mysterious circumstances while on a trek in Ontario's Algonquin Park in 1917. The timeframe was from the 1920-1960's.

They were strongly influenced by Post-Impressionism, creating bold, vividly-colored paintings.

The group included Franklin Carmichael, A.J. Casson, Lionel Fitzgerald, Arthur Lismer, Lawren Harris, Edwin Holgate, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, F.H. Varley.
